Advanced Cardiology

Description:

This advanced cardiology course will cover color and spectral Doppler of the heart.  Topics will cover applications of Doppler in acquired and congenital heart diseases of the dog and cat.

Target Group:

This course is intended for veterinarians already competent in basic two dimensional and M-mode echocardiography.

Seminar Objective:

  • Be familiar with and obtain standard Doppler imaging planes
  • Recognize Normal color and spectral Doppler patterns
  • Understand and utilize calculated pressure gradients in both acquired and congenital heart disease
  • Assess diastolic function  and parameters of LV filling pressure
  • Estimate pulmonary arterial pressures using Doppler and complimentary echocardiographic parameters of hypertension
  • Evaluation of right ventricular function

June Boon

Ms. Boon helped start the ultrasound programs at the Veterinary Teacing Hospital in 1979. In 1980 she focused her intersts on cardiac ultrasound and proceeded to publish normal echcocardiographic reference ranges in dogs and cats. She received her graduate degree in Clinical Sciences at Colorado State University in 1984. She published the first and only reference book devoted to veterinary echocardiography in 1998. Veterinarians worldwide come to Colorado State University to receive training in echocardiography from the faculty, residents and staff in the Cardiology Department.

Dr.  Matthew W.  Miller

Dr. Miller received his DVM degree from The Ohio State University in 1984 and his Masters of Science degree from the same university in 1993. He completed a small animal medicine and surgery internship at the West Los Angeles Veterinary Medical Group from 1984-1985 and a cardiology residency at the Ohio State University from 1985-1988. He became a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (Cardiology) in 1988. He served on the faculty of the Texas A&M University College of veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences from 1988-2014 where he achieved the position of full professor with tenure. He served as the director of the Texas A&M University Institute for Preclinical Studies (TIPS) from 2012 to 2014. He is currently a Senior Professor of Cardiology in The Department of Small Animal Veterinary Clinical Sciences in the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, Texas A&M University. He is a Charter Fellow of the Michael E. DeBakey Institute of Comparative Cardiovascular Science and Biomedical Devices. He is the director of the Cardiology Clinical Service at VETMED consultants in Phoenix Arizona.
